What 7 Fake Injuries Look Like Behind The Scenes | Movies Insider

Hollywoodโ€™s special makeup effects artists are frequently tasked with giving characters convincing injuries. The job involves a deep understanding of both what the human anatomy looks like and what looks best on camera. โ€œThe Irishmanโ€ required a broken hand, meaning a fake forearm that looks real while also moving and bending the way a real mangled arm would.

Meanwhile, HBOโ€™s โ€œI Know This Much Is Trueโ€ got rid of Mark Ruffaloโ€™s arm by painting his real hand green and using visual effects to erase it. These injuries also involve knowing how much fake blood should burst out of them, like when John Cusack got his neck slashed in โ€œThe Griftersโ€ and when John Travoltaโ€™s fingers were shot off in โ€œThe Fanatic.โ€ The surgery scenes in โ€œThe Knickโ€ and โ€œWestworldโ€ involved knowledge of both the outside and the inside of the human body, while the references used to create burn wounds are not quite what you would expect.
