A New York woman may be the first to have been cured using a new paradigm of treatment.

From 1981, when the first patients with HIV were identified, to 2007 – a cure for the deadly virus would have been a miracle. And then, Timothy Ray Brown – known as “The Berlin Patient” was cured. And just like that, a miracle became science.

Mr. Brown had been diagnosed with HIV in 1995. In 2006, he was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia which would require a donor bone marrow stem cell transplant for treatment. But this wasn’t just any donor. His donor was one of less than 1% of the world’s population, with a unique genetic mutation known as the CCR5-∆32 mutation. This rendered the donor’s immune cells resistant to HIV.

It was a gamble, to be sure, but it proved to be a successful one. Mr. Brown lived from 2007 to 2020 without the need for anti-retroviral therapy. He died from a relapse of AML. No HIV was detected at the time of his death.

The question, of course is simple: why can’t more people be cured of HIV?

I'm NEVER Making Ham Any Other Way AGAIN

This home-cured and smoked ham recipe is wet brined and then smoked and glazed to perfection for an incredible meal to serve to friends and family. You will be blown away by the flavors of this homemade ham.

Cured ham is one of many methods to help preserve pork. I used a wet brine to cure the pork to enhance the flavor and give it that coveted “pink ham” look. When purchasing this, you must ask for a “Fresh” bone-in ham. This is sometimes known as a green ham. If you ask your butcher for a regular ham, they’re going to take you to the section with already cured and smoked hams.

Smoked ham is ham that has been wet-cured and smoked until it reaches an internal temperature of 155°. Halfway through the process of smoking, the ham is typically basted with a glaze to help caramelize the outside pork to form a bark as well as help flavor it up.

USA swimmer's coach rescues her from pool after fainting at world championships | ITV News

injuries No Comments »

A US artistic swimmer was dramatically saved from the bottom of the pool by her coach when she fainted after her solo routine at the World Aquatics Championships.

Anita Álvarez, 25, had just completed her solo free final at the championships in Budapest on Wednesday when she collapsed and sank to the bottom of the pool.

Her coach, Andrea Fuentes, soon realised something was wrong and dived fully clothed into the pool to rescue Álvarez and pull her up to the surface.

The swimmer, who is competing at her third world championships, was not breathing when Fuentes and another helper dragged her poolside.

Fans and teammates were emotional as she was taken away on a stretcher to the medical centre – but Team USA later issued a statement saying she was “okay”.
